Syllabus

Algebra I

Syllabus

Mr. Raul Castillo

Course Description:

Algebra I includes the introduction of variables, constants, expressions, equations, and functions. The language of numbers is examined. Topics include solving equations, simplifying expressions, understanding order of operations, performing operations with positive and negative numbers, exploring polynomials, factoring, graphing ( linear and quadratic equations), working with radicals, and expanding arithmetic knowledge.

Course Objective:

Students will acquire and demonstrate knowledge of concepts, definitions, properties, and applications of the topics listed above as well as develop the computational skills and strategies needed to solve problems. Students will develop critical thinking and decision making skills by connecting concepts to practical applications.

Grading:  60% Major Assignments (Tests, Projects, Writing Assignments)

40% Minor Assignments (Homework, Classwork, Quizzes)

Course Curriculum:

The Algebra I will curriculum consists of Sharyland ISD teacher developed Scope and Sequence. The 5E Learning Cycle Model will be implemented in Algebra I to insure Rigor and Relevance.  The new state exam(STAAR/EOC) requires a more in-depth analysis of Algebra I.  Thus sequencing through unit based instruction will be used in conjunction with and not limited to Pearson and other resources to ensure a higher level of cognitive learning and understanding of Algebra I.

Course Schedule: Students will follow four units designed to address the five reporting categories:

Category 1: Number and Algebraic Methods - The student will demonstrate an understanding of how to use algebraic methods to manipulate numbers, expressions, and equations.

Category 2Describing and Graphing Linear Functions, Equations, and Inequalities - The student will demonstrate an understanding of how to describe and graph linear functions, equations, and inequalities.

Category 3Writing and Solving Linear Functions, Equations, and Inequalities - The student will demonstrate an understanding of how to write and solve linear functions, equations, and inequalities.

Category 4Quadratic Functions and Equations - The student will demonstrate an understanding of how to describe, write, and solve quadratic functions.

Category 5:Exponential Functions and Equations - The student will demonstrate an understanding of how to describe and write exponential functions and equations.
