COURSE TITLE: JROTC Leadership, Education and Training              

INSTRUCTORS: SGM (Ret) Roberto Rodriguez, MAJ (Ret) MANUEL NOYOLA

Office Hours: Monday through Friday 7:45am to 5:30 pm

CONFERENCE PERIOD: 1st block (08:05 to 9:30)

TUTORING TIME:  4:15 to 5:00 pm daily.

GENERAL PROCEDURES

COURSE DESCRIPTION:

The Junior Reserve Officer Training Corps (JROTC) program is a cooperative effort on the part of the United States Army and the Sharyland Independent School District. JROTC prepares students for responsible leadership roles while making them aware of their rights, responsibilities, and privileges as American citizens. The program is a stimulus for promoting graduation from high school, and it provides instruction and rewarding opportunities that will benefit the student, community, and nation. The mission of JROTC is, “To motivate young people to be better citizens.

 

 COURSE GOALS:

            a.  Teach students the value of citizenship and leadership.

            b.  Provide service support to our High schools and to the local communities.

            c.  Teach personal responsibility, and a sense of accomplishment, while instilling self-esteem, teamwork, and self-discipline.      

CONDITIONS FOR ENROLLMENT:

            a.  Students must be enrolled in one of the Sharyland High School’s to participate in JROTC and any special team activity.

            b.  Maintain an acceptable standard of conduct and be of good moral character.

            c.  Wear military uniform to class when instructed.

            d.  Students must be responsive to instructor authority and cadet chain of command through observance of rules and regulations.

CONDITIONS FOR DIS-ENROLLMENTIn all cases, a cadet will be considered for dis-enrollment when he or she:

           
a. Fails to keep acceptable standards within JROTC of academic achievement, conduct, appearance, or attendance.

          b. 
 Exhibits undesirable character traits, such as:

            (1)  Lying, cheating, or stealing

            (2)  Unauthorized possession or use of illegal drugs or substances

            (3)  Frequent incidents of a discreditable nature with civil or school authorities.

            (4)  Exhibits an indifference to and lack of interest in leadership training.              

UNIFORMS AND EQUIPMENT

            a.  All U.S. Government equipment, textbooks, and uniform items are provided to the student at no charge.

            b.  Items must be returned at the end of each semester undamaged. If items are lost or damaged beyond what is considered fair wear and tear, the student is required to replace or repair such items.

            c.  Student will be given and incomplete for their semester grade until all uniforms and equipment issued are returned.

GRADING PROCEDURES

COURSE EVALUATION.

            a.   Method of evaluation will include: written exams, quizzes, practical exercises, homework assignment, wear of JROTC uniform, and demonstrated marching skills.         

            b.  Student performance will be evaluated in the areas of academics and military skills for each six-week grading period.

             c.  Wear of Military Uniform.  Students will be evaluated each week in wear of prescribed uniform for that week. The grade for uniform wear will be based on number 1) if student is wearing the uniform, and number 2) is the uniform properly worn as prescribed by Cadet Command’s inspection criteria.

            d.  JROTC Textbook. Depending on pace of each chapter instruction, students will be administered a chapter examination, at least one-chapter practical exercise and a chapter quiz. Normally, we will complete between two and three chapters each grading period. Number of quizzes will depend upon class involvement. 

NINE WEEKS GRADES.

            a. The course grade for each grading period will be in accordance with district policy.

            b.  Grades will be weighted in the following areas:

  • Examinations         (Academics)           Major
  • Inspections           (Military skills)         Major   
  • Drill & Ceremony   (Leadership Lab)    Major
  • Cadet Knowledge   (Academic)            Minor
  • Quizzes                 (Academics)           Minor
  • Homework             (Academics)           Minor

SEMESTER EXAMINATION

            a. A semester examination will be administered covering all JROTC textbook chapters that were completed. Part of the semester exam will include a written essay on a citizenship related topic.           

            b. Criteria for determining semester examination grade will be 25% for written essay and 75% for final exam.                      

            c. Students will also have the opportunity to earn points that will be applied to their semester exam throughout the semester by earning community service points awarded for JROTC sponsored activities. A semester activity calendar and points awarded for each activity will be posted on the cadet bulletin board.

MAKE-UP POLICY

            a.  Weekly Uniform Wear. Students that do not wear the prescribed uniform for that week will have the opportunity to wear the uniform the next school day for a make-up grade.  A maximum grade of 70 will only be given for make-up.                       

            b.  JROTC textbook chapter exams. Students who fail to achieve a passing grade on a chapter exam will have the opportunity to retake the exam within one week. A maximum grade of 70 will only be given for retests.           

            c. Homework assignments. Ten points will be deducted for being late each day after the date the homework assignment was due.  

            d.  Extra Credit is available for students in need, but you must coordinate in advance.

All Cadet will earn cadet rank pending on either how many semesters they have been in JROTC or if they are holding a company or battalion leadership position. If a cadet is not in an active leadership position, they will wear the following permanent rank:

CADET BOARDS

PROMOTION BOARD

            a. The battalion while conduct two promotion boards each school.

                  A1. Fall semester promotions November.

                  A2. Spring semester promotions April

            b. Promotions will be conducted by the Company Leadership based on               uniform wear, class behavior, attitude, and JROTC knowledge.

            c. Before a cadet goes through a promotion board, they must first be              recommended by their Platoon Leadership. If a cadet has three or more referrals, and/or on probation, they are ineligible for promotion and must wait for the next scheduled board.

DISCIPLINARY BOARD.

The battalion staff will convene a disciplinary board when a cadet is referred by Company leadership for excessive infractions. Infractions can include but are not limited to: not wearing uniform, poor conduct or behavior. The battalion board, who gives their recommendation to the senior Army Instructor, may recommend removal from JROTC program, reduction in rank or position, probation, nor no action.

UNIFORM WEAR POLICY

In the event a cadet does not have an excuse from either instructor, the following policy will be initiated.

            a.  1st time in semester no uniform wear:  cadet counseling and 0 grade for that day.

            b.  2nd time in semester no uniform: parents contacted, placed on probation for rest of semester and 0 grade.

            c.  3rd time in semester: forwarded to battalion disciplinary for possible disenrollment from JROTC program and 0 grade.

 

RETURN OF JROTC PROPERTY AND EQUIPMENT

All students will sign for personal equipment through a government hand receipt. When a student leaves JROTC class, they are required to turn in all government and school property and clear their hand receipt before clearing JROTC. In the event a student leaves without properly clearing receipt, their names will be submitted to school administrators to recover and possible disciplinary actions. Students may be charge for damages beyond what is considered fair wear and tear. Costs would be the replacement value of the item.

The following classes will be taught in school year 2022-2023 classes based on Program of Instruction hours per subject. Classes taught are tentative based on successful student progress.

By signing below, I confirmed that I have read and understood the Sharyland High School JROTC course syllabus which includes grading procedures and weekly requirement to wear the military uniform to school. I also understand that all uniforms and equipment must be returned at the end of school year, otherwise I will be required to pay for any missing or damaged items.
